Up one’s sleeve (গুপ্ত অবস্থায়) – Khaleda will not disclose the plan that is up her sleeve.

Under a cloud (সন্দেহজনক, সন্দেহের ঘোরে থাকা, হতোদ্যম – to be suspected of something) – Even the manager is under a cloud. / His failure put him under a cloud for sometime. / After his misbehaviour on the field in India Boycott is under a cloud.

Under-age (অপ্রাপ্তবয়স্ক – immature, not adult) – The girl is under-age, so she must not be married to any man.

Under consideration (বিবেচনাধীন – under discussion and analysis) – His request is under consideration. / Your prayer is under consideration.

Under trial (বিচারাধীন – under judgement) – The case is under trial.

Up a blind alley (গোলকধাঁধায় – at a dead end) – The police are up a blind alley in their investigation of the crime.

Up and doing (কর্মঠ এবং প্রাণবন্ত, তাৎপর – active and lively, Be serious, মনযোগী হওয়া) – The children are always up and doing early in the morning. / Students should be up and doing to shine in life. / Now is the time for us to be up and doing for the prosperity of our country.

Up in the air (অনিশ্চিত, স্থির করা হয়নি এমন – uncertain, undecided) – Let’s leave this question up in the air until next week.

Idioms and Phrases

Up to (পর্যন্ত – to the extent of) – I have read the novel up to page 200. / I have done the exercise upto page 30.

Up to date (আধুনিক – modern) – Our teacher is always up to date in his work. / He is very careful to keep up with up to date fashions.

Up to one’s ears (গভীরভাবে জড়িত – deeply involved) – I am up to my ears in work.

Up to the mark (মানসম্মত – up to the standard) – Your performance is not up to the mark.

Up-hill task (কষ্ট সাধ্য কাজ – very hard work) – To be an honest man is an up-hill task. / It will be an uphill task for you to this difficult task.

Upper hand (প্রাধান্য – superiority) – A religious and honest person should be given upper hand. / The big guns always get the upper hand.

Ups and downs (উত্থান-পতন – rise and fall) – There are ups and downs in man’s life.

Utopian scheme (আকাশ কুসুম কল্পনা – building castle in the air, day dream) – Don’t make any utopian scheme which cannot be realized. / A utopian scheme is hard to materialize.

Unaware of (কোন ব্যাপারে অজ্ঞ)  I am unaware of the matter.

Ups and downs of life (জীবনের উত্থান পতন)  I have had my share of ups and downs of life.

Up and down (এইদিক ওইদিক)  The thief ran up and down for a shelter.

Upto the mark (আশানুরূপ)  Your performance is not upto the mark.

Up in arms (লড়াইয়ের জন্যে তৈরি)  In Afghanistan many Pathans are up in arms against Russians.

Up to date (হাল নাগাদ, বর্তমান সময়ের উপযোগী)  Our principal is always up-to date in his work.

Under way (এগিয়ে চলা)  The construction of the building is under way.

Under cover of darkness (রাতের আঁধারে)  The theft was committed under cover of darkness.

Under age (অপ্রাপ্ত বয়স্ক)   I could not apply for the job because I was under age.

Under construction (নির্মানাধীন)  This building is under construction.

Under the thumb (Completely under one's control, পুরোপুরি অধীন)  He is under the thumb of his wife.

Under the weather (Slightly ill/ sick, সামান্য অসুস্থ)  I feel a bit under the weather today.

Under lock and key (তালাবদ্ধ)  He kept the money under lock and key.

Under one's nose (চোখের সামনে)  The incident took place under my nose.

Under one's eye (তত্ত্বাবধানে)  The workers in this factory work under the supervisor's eye.

Under pain of (শাস্তির মুখে)  He had to confess the truth under pain of death.

Under one's breath (নিচু স্বরে)   They said something under their breath.
