Compound Sentence
যে Sentence এ এক বা একাধিক principal clause coordinating conjunction দ্বারা
যুক্ত থাকে, তাকে Compound Sentence বলে।
A compound sentence is a sentence that has more than one principal clause
connected by one or more coordinating conjunctions.
Examples & Illustration (উদাহরণ এবং ব্যাখ্যা) :
প্রথমে বুঝার সুবিধার জন্যে আমরা coordinating conjunction গুলো একবার স্মরণ করে
নিই। চলুক দেখা যাক কোনগুলো coordinating conjunction—
and, or, but, both _______ and, not only _______ but also, no less
than, no fewer than, neither _______ nor, either _______ or, otherwise,
still, yet, nevertheless, on the contrary, while, whereas, only, therefore,
consequently, for ইত্যাদি হলো coordinating conjunction। এখন সরাসরি উদাহরণে চলে
যাওয়া যাক,
He is poor.
সে গরিব।
He is honest.
সে সৎ।
এই বাক্য দু'টি স্বাধীন। এদেরকে but —coordinating conjunction টি দ্বারা
যদি যুক্ত করা হয় তাহলে এরা বাক্য গঠন করে; কিন্তু তখনও প্রত্যেকেই স্বাধীনভাবে
নিজেদের অর্থ প্রকাশ করতে পারে। এজন্য এরা একেকটি principal বা independent
clause এ পরিণত হয়। যেমন—
He is poor but he is honest.
একসাথে,
He is poor but honest.
যেখানে He is poor হল principal clause এবং
he is honest-ও principal clause।
এই বাক্যটির (He is poor but he is honest) দুইটি clause এর কোনটি অন্যটির
উপর নির্ভরশীল নয়। উভয় clause কে আলাদা আলাদাভাবে লিখলেও তারা আলাদা আলাদা ভাবে
স্বাধীনবাক্য প্রকাশ করতে পারে। যেমন—
He is poor.
(but) He is honest.
তাই He is poor but honest. এই
বাক্যটিকে Compound Sentence বলে।
An Interesting Point (মজার বিষয়) :
কমপক্ষে দুইটি Clause থাকে ব'লে compound sentence এ কমপক্ষে দুইটি Finite verb
থাকে।
Practice More :
Not only Rahim (event there) but also
Karim went there.
শুধু করিম নয় রহিমও সেখানে গিয়েছিল।
Study hard or (otherwise) you will fail.
কঠোর পড়ালেখা কর নইলে ফেইল করবে।
Either Karim (went there) or Rahim went there.
হয় করিম না হয় রহিম সেখানে গিয়েছিল।
His father is an honest man while
he is a thief.
The man had no money nevertheless
he wanted to buy the shirt.
উপরের প্রতিটি বাক্যে বোল্ড / মার্ক অংশটুকু দ্বারা Coordinate Clause বোঝানো
হয়েছে।
Double Sentence :
কোন Compound Sentence এর দুটি coordinate clause থাকলে তাকে Double Sentence
বলে। যেমন—
He came to me and discussed the matter.
You must do it or you will be in a danger.
They will eat and (they will) drink.
উপরের প্রতিটি বাক্যে বোল্ড / মার্ক অংশটুকু দ্বারা
Coordinate Clause বোঝানো হয়েছে।
Multiple Sentence :
কোন Compound Sentence এর দুই—এর অধিক Coordinate clause থাকলে তাকে Multiple
Sentence বলে। যেমন—
I came, I saw and I conquered.
আমি এলাম, আমি দেখলাম এবং আমি জয় করলাম।
The man did the work, took some rest and
went home.
I thought, thought and thought.

হয়েছে।
