↬ The Computer Revolution

Introduction : The very nature of the Computer Revolution indicates that the ethic of the future will have a global character. It will be global in a spatial sense since it will encompass the entire globe. It will also be global in the sense that it will address the totality of human actions and relations. The future global ethic will be a computer ethic because it will be caused by the Computer Revolution and it will serve the humanity of a Computer Era.

History of computer revolution : A complete history of computing would include a multitude of diverse devices such as the ancient Chinese abacus, the Jacquard Loom (1805) and Charles Babbage’s ‘analytical engine’ (1834). It would also include discussion of mechanical, analogue and digital computing architectures. As late as the 1960s, mechanical devices, such as the Merchant calculator, still found widespread application in science and engineering. During the early days of electronic computing devices, there was much discussion about the relative merits of analogue vs. digital computers. In fact, as late as the 1960s, analogue computers were routinely used to solve systems of finite difference equations arising in oil reservoir modelling. In the end, digital computing devices proved to have the power, economics and scalability necessary to deal with large scale computations. Digital computers now dominate the computing world in all areas ranging from the hand calculator to the supercomputer and are pervasive throughout society. Therefore, this brief sketch of the development of scientific computing is limited to the area of digital, electronic computers.

One of the first commercial uses of mechanical computers was by the US Census Bureau, which used punch-card equipment designed by Herman Hollerith to tabulate data for the 1890 census. In 1991 Hollerith’s company merged with a competitor to found the corporation which in 1924 became International Business Machines.

Revolution in communication : Computer revolution brings enormous development in communication. With the help of computers, communication is very much easier nowadays. Internet or WWW (World Wide Wave) is a great blessing of computer revolution. VOIP has made communication cheaper.

Revolution in business : Revolution occurs in business with the flow of computer revolution. Nowadays most of banking system have been networked. Online banking is very frequent now. The stock Exchange, share market, everywhere, there is a touch of computer revolution.

Revolution in graphics : Computer revolution has made a great era in graphical world. All kinds of graphical works, 3D animation is possible with the help of computer.

Conclusion : The revolution of computer made so many blessings to us. But it has very little disadvantage. The more dependency on computer is decreasing human thinking power. Moreover to some people, using computer is a kind of drug and they waste their time. Without these small things’ computer has made life faster. This era is a computer era that is beyond doubt.

Science has discovered many wonders and computer is one of them.

Computer was not invented overnight. It took long time and hard labour to invent computer. First of all, Pascal invented the theory of “Digital Calculating System” in 1642. Though his attempts were not crowned with success. he initiated the research which paved the way to the invention of computer. Finally, Mr. Hayward Akai, an American scientist invented such a machine in 1937 that could do difficult sums. After seven years electric computer was used at Harvard University in 1944. After that many other computers have been invented such as EDSAC in 1945 and ENTICE in 1946 etc.

A computer consists of five major components. They are the input unit, the output unit, the memory unit, the control unit and the arithmetic unit.

A computer performs three functions:
  1. It receives data
  2. It processes data
  3. It emits data
Computer is of great use to us. It renders great service to mankind. It is like Aladdin’s magic lamp or magic wand. It has lessened our workloads and made our life easy and comfortable. It is used in all spheres of our life like Education, medical science, agriculture, commerce, printing, industrial sector etc.

Computer is a source of great income. Many developed and advanced countries export software and hardware and earn a lot.

There is no unmixed blessing on earth. Everything has its dark sides. Computer has its own demerits. It causes diseases like Repetitive Stress Injury and weakens the eyesight of the operators.

Of late computer has been introduced in Bangladesh. Many government and non-government offices, educational institutions are using computer. A course on computer has been introduced in secondary and higher secondary levels. The day is not far to come when computers will be used in every sphere of life.

Computer is of great use to us. We cannot go a single moment without computer. It is part and parcel in our daily life.
