The Chimney Sweeper : A little black thing among the snow

A little black thing among the snow,
Crying “weep! weep!” in notes of woe!
“Where are thy father and mother? say?”
“They are both gone up to the church to pray.
Because I was happy upon the heath.
And smil’d among the winter’s snow,
They clothed me in the clothes of death.
And taught me to sing the notes of woe.
And because I am happy and dance and sing,
They think they have done me no injury,
And are gone to praise Cod and his Priest and King.
Who make up a heaven of our misery.”
তুষারের মাঝে এক ক্ষুদ্র কালো বস্তু,
বিষণ্ণ সুরে কেঁদে চলছিল!
‘কোথায় তোমার বাবা-মা? বলো?’
“তারা দুজনেই গীর্জায় প্রার্থনায়।
কেননা আমি সুখী ও স্বাস্থ্যবান ছিলাম,
শীতের তুষারে আমি হাসতাম,
তারা আমাকে মৃত্যুর কাপড় পরালো,
আর আমাকে গাইতে শেখালো বিষণ্ণ সুরের গান।
কেননা আমি সুখী, নাচি আর গাই,
তারা ভাবে আমার কোনো ক্ষতি করেনি,
আর চলে যায় স্রষ্টা, যাজক আর রাজার স্তুতি গাইতে,
যারা আমাদের দুঃখে স্বর্গ গড়ে।”
The Theme : The poem speaks against religious bigotry. In the poem the dehumanization of the boy is the result of religious bigotry. The boy was happy but his parents and society snatched all his joy only for religion. Thus humanity and human values are sacrificed because of religious bigotry. So the poem focuses on the cruelty and hostility of the parents and the society in the name of religion.
(কবিতাটি ধর্মীয় গোঁড়ামির বিরুদ্ধে কথা বলে। কবিতায় বালকটির অমানবিবিকরণ কার্যত ধর্মীয় গোঁড়ামির ফল। বালকটি সুখেই ছিল কিন্তু তার বাবা-মা এবং সমাজ শুধু ধর্মের জন্যে তার সকল আনন্দ কেড়ে নেয়। তাই ধর্মীয় গোঁড়ামির কারণে মানবতা এবং মানবিক মূল্যবোধ বিসর্জন দেয়া হয়েছে। তাই কবিতায় ধর্মের নামে তার বাবা-মা ও সমাজের নিষ্ঠুরতা ও বৈরতার ওপর আলোকপাত করেছে।)
