The Garden of Love
William Blake (1757 – 1827)
I went to the Garden of Love,
And saw what I never had seen;
A Chapel was built in the midst,
Where I used to play on the green.
And the gates of this Chapel were shut,
And Thou shalt not, writ over the door;
So I turned to the Garden of Love
That so many sweet flowers bore.
And I saw it was filled with graves,
And tombstones where flowers should be;
And Priests in black gowns were walking their rounds,
And binding with briars my joys and desires.
আমি গিয়েছিলাম ভালোবাসার বাগানে,
দেখেছি যা কখনও দেখিনি;
মধ্যস্থলে বানানো হয়েছিল এক ভজনালয়,
যেখানে সবুজ মাঠে আমি খেলা করতাম,
ভজনালয়ের ফটক ছিল বন্ধ
উপরে লেখা ছিল ‘তুমি ঢুকবে না’;
তাই আমি ভালোবাসার বাগানের দিকে ফিরলাম;
যেখানে ছিল অনেক মিষ্টি ফুল।
আমি দেখলাম এটি সমাধিতে পূর্ণ,
ফুলের স্থলে সমাধি স্তম্ভ;
কালো আলখাল্লা পড়া যাজকেরা চারপাশে ঘুরছিলেন,
আর আমার স্বপ্নগুলোকে বনগোলাপের কাঁটায় বাঁধছিলেন।
The Theme : In this poem the Garden of Love represents vigorous pleasure. But the Garden of Love has turned into a graveyard for the priests. And, so this poem satirizes the rigid codes of morality and ethics imposed by the church that deny the essential and tender human emotions such as love.
