Once there lived a happy cobbler who passed his days in working and singing. A rich neighbour of his was a banker who one day said to him, “How much a year do you earn?” The cobbler laughed and said, “How much a year! Sir, I never reckoned in that way, living as I do from hand to mouth; each day somehow brings its meal and I am happy.” The banker said, “I have resolved to place you above the fear of want. Take these thousand dollars, preserve them carefully and use them in time of need.” The cobbler who had never seen so much money at a time in his life before hurried home and buried his treasure in the earth, but alas! he buried his happiness with it too, because at night he could not enjoy a sound sleep. He would remain alert the whole night. He would think of the money. Thus, he lost his sleep and happiness. One day, he went to the banker and told him that his money had snatched away his slip. So, he told the banker to take his money back and finally, the cobbler returned the money to the banker. Again, he was able to enjoy sound sleep with mental peace and happiness. Hence, it was proved that true happiness lies in contentment.

Money cannot Buy Happiness

Once there lived a happy cobbler who passed his days in working and singing from morning till night. A rich man of his neighbour asked him one day “How much a year do you earn?” The cobbler laughed and said“. I never reckon my money in the way. I go as fast as it comes, but I am glad to be able to earn it. I mend shoes on from day to day and earn a living.” “Well, then how much do you earn each day?” asked the rich man. “Sometimes more and sometimes less.” answered the cobbler. “On many holidays I earn nothing but I manage to live.” “You are a happy man now.” said the rich man. “But I will make you happier,” and he handed the cobbler one thousand dollars. “Go, spend this money carefully. It will supply your needs for many days,” he said. The cobbler had never dreamt of so much many before. He thought it was enough to keep him in food and clothes all his life. He took the money home and hid it, but he hid his joy with it. He stopped singing and became sad. He could not sleep for fear of robbers. He thought that everyone who came into his shop was trying to find out his secret. When a cat ran over the floor, he thought a thief had slipped through the door.

Money cannot Bring Happiness

or,

Obsession with money

Once there lived a happy cobbler who passed his day working and singing from morning till night. A rich neighbour of his was a banker who one day said to him, "How much a year do you earn?" The cobbler replied, "I don’t know and I never think in that way as I live from hand to mouth." The banker said, "I am very sorry for your poverty. You should try to change your fortune." The cobbler laughed and said, "I am happy with what I can earn daily." The next day the banker came again and said, "Look, my friend! I want to drive away your distress. Take these thousand pounds, keep it carefully and use it in time of need." The cobbler became very much surprised having the large amount. He had never seen so much money at a time in his life before. At first, he could not think where he should hide the money for safety. Then, he dug a hole in his hut and buried it. At night, a new thinking crossed over his mind, "Someone might steal my money." As a result, he could not sleep at all. Next few days, he could neither do any work nor sleep at night for the thinking of money. At last, he could realize that the money had snatched away his mental peace and happiness. So, one morning he went to the banker’s house and returned the money. From then, he could pass his days with singing and great happiness as before.
