The Schoolboy
William Blake (1757 – 1827)
I love to rise in a summer morn.
When the birds sing on every tree;
The distant huntsman winds his horn,
And the skylark sings with me;
O what sweet company!
But to go to school in a summer morn,
O it drives all joy away!
Under a cruel eye outworn,
The little ones spend the day
In sighing and dismay.
Ah then at times I drooping sit,
And spend many an anxious hour;
Nor in my book can I take delight,
Nor sit in learning’s bower,
Worn through with the dreary shower.
How can the bird that is born for joy
Sit in a cage and sing?
How can a child, when fears annoy,
But droop his tender wing,
And forget his youthful spring!
ভালোলাগে আমার গ্রীষ্মের সকালে উঠতে
যখন গাছে গাছে পাখিরা গান গায়,
দূরের শিকারি তার শিস বাজায়
আর ভারতপাখি আমার সাথে গেয়ে ওঠে;
আহ! কী মধুর সঙ্গ!
কিন্তু গ্রীষ্মের ভোরে স্কুলে যাওয়া;
ওহ, মাটি করে দেয় সব আনন্দ!
নির্দয় এক জীর্ণ চোখের শৃঙ্খলে,
ছোট্ট শিশুদের দিনটা কাটে
দীর্ঘশ্বাস আর হাপিত্যেশে
আহা তারপর কখনো বা ভগ্নমনে বসে থাকি
আর অজস্র উদ্বেগের সময় পার করি;
না পারি বইয়ের আনন্দ নিতে
না পারি বসতে শিক্ষাকুঞ্জে
ক্লান্তির বর্ষাধারায় ছিন্নভিন্ন
আনন্দের তরে জন্মানো পাখি
কী করে খাঁচায় থেকে গান গায়?
কীভাবে একটি শিশু, ভীত বিরক্ত
কচি পাখা তার ক্লান্তি নোয়ানো
আর ভোলে সে নিজের তারুণ্যভরা বসন্ত!
The Theme : The poem deals with the theme of ‘innocence’. Innocent childhood is the period of displaying inherent childish prank. In this period no child wants to go to school without enjoying bird’s song, huntsman’s winding horn and the skylark’s company during the summer morning. To a child, summer morn school classroom is joyless and boring. It is the place of singing, drooping, dismay and anxiety. So every child wants to avoid the dour-faced teachers and joyless lessons of school in the summer morning, rather wants to take lessons in the lap of nature. Each and every child wishes to enjoy the time in mirth and merriment.
(কবিতাটিতে ‘নিষ্পাপতা’ বিষয়ে আলোকপাত করা হয়েছে। নিষ্পাপ শৈশব হচ্ছে সহজাত শিশুসুলভ দুষ্টুমি প্রদর্শনের সময়। এ সময়ে কোনো শিশুই চায় না গ্রীষ্মের সকালে পাখির গান, শিকারীর বাঁশীর সুর না-শুনে, ও ভরতপাখির সঙ্গ-ছাড়া স্কুলে যেতে। শিশুর কাছে গ্রীষ্মের সকালের স্কুল শ্রেণীকক্ষগুলো নিরানন্দ ও বিরক্তিকর। এ হচ্ছে দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলার, হতোৎসাহ, নিরুৎসাহ ও উদ্বিগ্ন হওয়ার। তাই প্রতিটি শিশু গ্রীষ্মের ছুটিকালীন দিনগুলোর সকালে সে ভয়ঙ্কর চেহারার শিক্ষকদের এবং স্কুলের নিরানন্দ পাঠকে এড়াতে চায়, বরঞ্চ সে চায় প্রকৃতির কোলে পাঠ/শিক্ষা লাভ/অর্জন করতে। প্রতিটি শিশুই এই সময়টা হাসি-আনন্দের মধ্যে উপভোগ করতে চায়।)
