The Sands of Dee
Charles Kingsley (1819 – 1875)
“O mary, go and call the cattle home,
And call the cattle home
The western wind and wild and dank with foam
And all alone she went,
The western tide creft up along the sand.
And o’er and o’er the sand.
As far as eye could see
The rolling mist came down and hid the land;
And never home came she.
“Oh! is it weed, or fish, or floating hair-
A trees of golden hair,
A drowned maiden’s hair
Above the nets at sea?
Was never salmon yet that shone of fair
Among the stakes on Dee.”
They rowed her in across the rolling foam,
The cruel crawling foam,
The cruel hungry foam,
To her grave beside the sea;
But still the boatmen hear her call the cattle home
Across the sands of Dee.
শোন্ মা আমিনা, রেখে দে রে কাজ ত্বরা করি মাঠে চল,
এল মেঘনায় জোয়ারের বেলা এখনি নামিবে ঢল।
নদীর কিনার ঘন ঘাসে ভরা
মাঠ থেকে গরু নিয়ে আয় ত্বরা
করিস না দেরি- আসিয়া পড়িবে সহসা অথই জল
মাঠ থেকে গরু নিয়ে আয় ত্বরা মেঘনায় নামে ঢল।
এখনো যে মেয়ে আসে নাই ফিরে- দুপুর যে বয়ে যায়।
ভরা জোয়ারের মেঘনার জল কূলে কূলে উছলায়।
নদীর কিনার জলে একাকার,
যেদিকে তাকাই অথই পাথার,
দেখতো গোহালে গরুগলি রেখে গিয়েছে কি ও পাড়ায়?
এখনো ফিরিয়া আসে নাই সে কি? দুপুর যে বয়ে যায়।
ভরবেলা গেলো, ভাটা পড়ে আসে, আঁধার জমিছে আসি,
এখনো তবুও এলো না ফিরিয়া আমিন সর্বনাশী।
দেখ্ দেখ্ দূরে মাঝ-দরিয়ায়,
কাল চুল যেন ঐ দেখা যায়-
কাহার শাড়ির আঁচল-আভাস সহসা উঠিছে ভাসি?
আমিনারে মোর নিল কি টানিয়া মেঘনা সর্বনাশী।

The Theme : Mary a farmer’s daughter, was asked to call the cattle home from the sands of Dee. She went for this, but a tide rose up and covered the bank, and a dense mist darkened the land. Mary was drowned in the river by the foul weather and did never come back. Salmon fishers rescued her dead body and buried it beside the sea. None could forget this pathetic event. The boatmen still hear Mary call the cattle home across the sands of Dee.
(কৃষকের মেয়ে মেরিকে নদীর তীর থেকে গবাদিপশু বাড়ি ডেকে আনতে বলা হয়েছিল। এজন্য সে বাইরে যায় কিন্তু জলোচ্ছ্বাস উঠায় তীর পানিতে ঢেকে যায় এবং কুয়াশায় ভূমি অন্ধকার হয়ে যায়। খারাপ আবহাওয়ার কারণে মেরি ডী নদীতে ডুবে যায় এবং কখনও ফিরে আসেনি। স্যামন জেলেরা তার মৃতদেহ উদ্ধার করে নদীর পাশে তা সমাহিত করে। এ করুণ ঘটনাটি কেউ ভুলতে পারেনি। মাঝিরা এখনও ডী নদীর তীরে মেরির গবাদিপশু বাড়ি ডেকে আনার শব্দ শুনে।)
