Florence Nightingale


Florence Nightingale is one of the greatest women in the world. She worked day and night to help the wounded soldiers of the Crimean War. She was born on May 12, 1820. Nightingale came of a rich family and studied nursing at Nurses' Training Institute, Germany. She is most remembered as a pioneer of nursing and a reformer of hospital sanitation methods. Her first job was in a London hospital. Then she went to Turkey with a group of 38 nurses. There she worked for the sick British soldiers during the Crimean War. Her hard work and sincerity in her duty made her famous in nursing. She became familiar as "the lady with the lamp". She set up Nightingale school for nurses in London. This great lady struggled throughout her life to give remedy and comfort to the sick and helpless people. Her knowledge and power in the medical field changed the way nursing is done today. She breathed her last on August 13, 1910.
