Food Adulteration
Food adulteration is the act of intentionally debasing the quality of food
offered for sale either by the admixture or substitution of inferior
substances or by the removal of some valuable ingredient. Food adulteration is
a social curse. It is now a very familiar word in the country. There is hardly
any food that is free from adulteration.
Adulteration is exposed in foodstuffs in many forms. Milk is made impure by
mixing water with it. Soya oil is made impure by mixing palm oil. Ghee is made
adulterated by mixing animal grease. Pesticides are used to dry fish.
Artificial colourants are used in juice and drinks. Formalin is used to keep
fish fresh and durable. Mixing the high fructose corn syrup in honey. In order
to increase the weight of the foodstuff, man mixes sand with them.
Sometimes rice, our main food, is adulterated with crushed particles of stones
or pebbles which look exactly like fine rice. But these particles of pebbles
are never digested and they may be stored in the stomachs or kidneys of the
human body. They may cause severe pain in our stomachs and kidneys and even
lead to cancer.
There are many causes for adulteration in Bangladesh. Excessive greed and
lack of more quality of the businessmen are the main causes of food
adulteration some dishonest businessmen want to make more profit by selling
adulterated food.
The adulteration of food creates an adverse effect on public health because
the impact of food adulteration is very dangerous and dreadful. When people
take adulterated food, they become helpless victims of various diseases like
diarrhoea, dysentery, typhoid, ulcer, blood pressure, and even cancer.
Sometimes, we see that many people die all of a sudden because of food
poisoning. But it is obvious that this sort of food poisoning is caused by
food adulteration. As a result of eating impure foods, our future generation
is at the threat of death.
Under these circumstances, our government should resist the attempts to
adulterate food at any cost. They should come forward and take positive
steps like they should employ honest and qualified people, make some stern
laws against adulteration mixers, etc. Different institutions and food
sellers will have to be fined and punished for mixing adulteration with
foodstuff.
Food adulteration is a heinous act. This crime creates physical diseases
that lead people to death. Not only the government but also the masses can
make awareness to stop this crime from the country.
