Paragraph - 1

Global Village

The term ‘global village’ was first used by Marshal McLuhan. In 1962 and 1964 he wrote two books on media and communication. In his books, he said that telephone, TV and electronic media have brought all mankind close to one another. For example, if we see the news of floods in a distant country on TV, we feel that we are also connected there. We can see that is happening at the same moment. We can share the same suffering with the people who are in real misery at the moment. McLuhan believed that electronic media would make the world a global village. When he first said about the idea of the global village, the Internet was not invented. But now, personal computers and the Internet have made McLuhan’s idea more correct than ever. Now the entire globe is chained in the world-wide-web called 'The Internet'.

Paragraph - 2

How to Keep Good Health

or, How to Keep Fit

Good health refers to the physical and mental soundness which makes one healthy, fit and active and keeps one free from diseases. But it is not easy to maintain good health. In order to keep good health, one should follow certain rules of health. One should take regular physical exercise, proper rest or sleep and above all, a balanced diet. But it is a matter of regret that most of our people, as they are living below the poverty line, cannot manage all the foods necessary for maintaining good health. But even the rich and educated people of our country, though they take a wide variety of foods, are not conscious of the rules of good health. The ever-increasing problems of our day-to-day life seem to affect our health greatly. They give rise to frustration, hopelessness, mental disorder and many other socio-economic confusions. All these factors take away the peace of our mind and affect our health. However, a person with a simple and carefree life is likely to enjoy a sound mind in a sound body.

In present competitive world one has to know how to keep fit because the rule of survival of the fittest is still in action and bodily fitness is the prerogative of fitness as a whole. This bodily fitness is not so easy to achieve. One has to eat a balanced diet, take physical exercise, enjoy adequate sleep and follow the basic rules of health to achieve such fitness. Moreover, one has to keep oneself aloof from all kinds of drug of health one cannot keep fit. If one does not take regular exercise one’s muscles become gradually idle and inactive making one inactive also. If one does not eat proper food one’s body does not grow properly. So one needs to follow the rules of health properly and regularly to keep one’s body fit and mind as well.

Bangladesh is a country which experiences natural calamity almost every year. I experienced various sorts of natural calamities in my life as I am a son of this soil. Among all these calamities, the devastating flood of 1998 is still vivid in my memory. Eight districts in the south-west of Bangladesh had been inundated ruptly. The areas which are inundated had been out of flood for long sixty years. All the kacha houses were washed away by the devasting flood. Almost all the trees were uprooted. All kinds of crops were damaged totally inviting a serious famine. The people of those districts became houseless, shelterless and foodless. Though the government and some other non-government organizations extended their helping hands, many people died of starvation. There broke out diarrhoea in an epidemic form taking away many lives. As I am a resident of Patuakhali, I experienced the pathetic scene of the affected areas. Still, I shudder to reminder the devastating effect of the flood.
