The Deer

The deer is a beautiful wild animal. It is usually the size of a goat. It has two eyes, two ears, a long face and a short tail. Its body is covered with short hair. The colour is usually brownish, often with white on the chest and throat. Some two small hooves on each foot. It is remarkable for its beautiful antlers or branched horns in the males of most species and in the females of some species. Deer occur mainly in forests but may be found in habitats as diverse as deserts, tundra, swamps and high mountainsides. In Bangladesh, deer are found in Sundarbans, and in the forest of Sylhet and Chittagong. They are natives of Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Northern Africa. As herbivorous animals, deer feed on grass, twigs, bark and shoots. They are usually gregarious, and some make long annual migrations. They are most active in early morning and late afternoon, resting at midday and at night. Most live in small banda comprising a family group.
