Main idea : Company is like a touchstone that exposes the personality and taste of a man.

Amplification : Man is a social being. He cannot live alone. Therefore, he always seeks the company of others. For this inclination and trait of man, man has been living in the society from time immemorial. But persons whose tastes and inclinations are different from ours cannot give us the delight which we expect from friends. So, man naturally seeks the company of those who are like himself in their taste and inclination. We can, therefore, very easily say of what sort a man is from the nature and character of his friends. Moreover, friends play a great influence upon our character and life as a whole. If we keep bad company, we shall get their bad habits and gradually debase ourselves. In fact, bad or evil company degrades our character and morality. If we mix with the good and the noble, it will ennoble us, too. Our character can thus be judged from that of our companions. And our choice of friends or companions justifies our character and personality. Thus, we have to be very careful and cautious about our choice of companions and friends.

মূলভাব : সঙ্গ কষ্টিপাথরের ন্যায় যা একজন মানুষের ব্যক্তিত্ব ও রুচিকে পরিচিত করে।

ভাবসম্প্রসারণ : মানুষ সামাজিক জীব। সে একা বাস করতে পারে না। তাই সে সর্বদা অপরের সঙ্গ অনুসন্ধান করে। এই প্রবৃত্তি ও বৈশিষ্ট্যের জন্য মানুষ স্মরণাতীত কাল হতে সমাজে বাস করছে। কিন্তু যে ব্যক্তিদের রুচি ও প্রবৃত্তি আমাদের থেকে আলাদা, তারা আমাদের আনন্দ দিতে পারে না যা আমরা বন্ধুদের কাছ থেকে প্রত্যাশা করি। তাই মানুষ স্বভাবতই যাদের রুচি ও প্রবৃত্তি তার নিজের মতো, তাদের সঙ্গ কামনা করে। তাই আমরা খুব সহজেই বলতে পারি তার বন্ধুরা কোন প্রকৃতির ও চরিত্রের। অধিকন্তু বন্ধুরা আমাদের চরিত্র ও সমগ্র জীবনের ওপর গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রভাব বিস্তার করে। যদি আমরা খারাপ সঙ্গে মিশি, তাহলে আমরা তাদের খারাপ অভ্যাসে অভ্যস্ত হয়ে যাব এবং ধীরে ধীরে আমাদের অধঃপতন ঘটবে। বন্তুত, থারাপ বা মন্দ সঙ্গ আমাদের চরিত্র ও নৈতিকতার মর্যাদাকে লাঘব করবে। যদি আমরা ভালো ও মহৎ লোকদের সাথে মিশি, তাহলে এটি আমাদেরকে মর্যাদাসম্পন্ন করবে। এভাবে আমাদের চরিত্রকে আমাদের সঙ্গীদের থেকে বিচার করা যেতে পারে এবং আমাদের বন্ধু ও সঙ্গী পছন্দ আমাদের চরিত্র ও ব্যক্তিত্বকে বিচার করে। এভাবে আমাদের সঙ্গী ও বন্ধু বাছাইয়ের ব্যাপারে আমাদের অধিক সতর্ক ও সচেতন থাকতে হবে।
