The Shepherd
William Blake (1757 – 1827)
How sweet is the shepherd’s sweet lot!
From the morn to the evening the strays;
He shall follow his sheep all the day.
And his tongue shall be filled with praise.
For he hears the lambs’ innocent call,
And he hears the ewes’ tender reply;
He is watchful while they are in peace,
For they know when their shepherd is nigh.
কি মনোরম মেষ পালকের প্রসন্ন ভাগ্য!
সকাল থেকে সন্ধ্যা সে ছুটোছুটি করে;
সারাদিন তার মেষগুলোকে অনুসরণ করে,
আর তার বচন হয় স্তূতিপূর্ণ।
কারণ সে শুনতে পায় মেষশাবকের নিষ্পাপ ডাক,
আর সে শুনতে পায় ভেড়ীর স্নেহপূর্ণ প্রত্যুত্তর;
সে সতর্ক প্রহরা দেয় যখন তারা বিশ্রাম নেয়,
কারণ তারা জানে তাদের মেষপালক তখন সমীপবর্তী।
The Poem : Here in this poem the Shepherd stands for God and the sheep represent human beings. So the poem implies the happiness and security of human beings under the blessings of God. It also shows the enjoyment and happiness of God in the innocence of his creations.
(এই কবিতায় রাখাল ঈশ্বরের এবং মেষ মানবজাতির প্রতীক। তাই কবিতাটি ঈশ্বরের আশীর্বাদের ছায়ায় মানুষের সুখ ও নিরাপত্তার প্রতি ঈঙ্গিত করে। এতে তার সৃষ্টির নিষ্পাপতায় ঈশ্বরের আনন্দ ও সুখ প্রকাশিত হয়েছে।)
