Alone, alone, all, all alone
Alone on a wide wide sea!
And never a saint took pity on
My soul in agony.
The many men, so beautiful
And they all dead did lie
And a thousand thousand slimy things
Lives on; and so did I.
একাকী নিঃসঙ্গ, একেবারে একা
বিশাল-বিস্তৃত অপার সমুদ্র পরে
কভু সিদ্ধজনের দয়া পায়নি দেখা
যাতনাকতর এই আত্মার তরে।
অপরাধহীন বহু নিষ্পাপ জন
প্রাণহীন তনু পতিত সটান
বিরক্তি জাগানিয়া সহস্র প্রাণ
বেঁচে থাকে সেথা, আমারই মতন।
The Theme : The speaker of the poem is the ancient mariner. These lines record the incident of their ship being stuck on the Atlantic Ocean. All other mariners embraced death except the ancient mariner who survived but suffered the worst. It was his punishment to survive and suffer because of the curse that fell on them.
(কবিতার কথক হচ্ছে বৃদ্ধ নাবিক। এই ছন্দগুলোতে বরফাচ্ছন্ন সমুদ্র তাদের জাহাজ আটকে যাবার ঘটনাটি উঠে এসেছে। জাহাজের সকলেই মৃত্যুকে আলিঙ্গন করে শুধু বৃদ্ধ নাবিক ছাড়া যিনি বেঁচে যান এবং চরম দুর্দশা পোহান। তবে বেঁচে থাকা এবং ভোগান্তির কারণ ছিল তাদের ওপর পতিত অভিশাপে তার শাস্তি।)
