Solitary Reaper
William Wordsworth
Behold her, single in the field
You solitary High land less!
Reaping and singing be herself
Stop her or gently pass!
Alone she cuts and binds the grains
And single a melancholy strain
O listen! for the Value profound
Is overwhelming with the sound.
No nightingale did ever chant
More welcome notes to weary bands
Of travelers I some shady haunt,
Among Arabian sands.
ঐ যে দেখ একাকীনি,
অদূরস্থ নিঃসঙ্গ পাহাড়ি বালিকা!
আপনমনে শস্য কাটছে আর গইছে গান;
একটু থামাও তারে, কিংবা আস্তে আস্তে হাঁট!
একাকী সে কাটছে আর বাঁধছে শস্যগুলো,
আর গাইছে এক বিষণ্ণ গান;
একটু শোন! উপত্যকার গভীর পর্যন্ত যেন
ছড়িয়ে পড়ছে সুরে
কোন বুলবুলি পাখি কখনও গায়নি
এর চেয়ে বেশি অভিবাদন গীতি
ক্লান্ত মুসাফিরের প্রতি বারবার চলা ছায়াচ্ছন্ন স্থানে,
আরবদেশের মরুভূমির মাঝে।
The Theme : The poem is about the poet’s fascination for a village girl. The girl was reaping crops and singing a song alone in a field. The poet was captivated by the music of the girl’s melancholy song. It seems to him that the song of the girl was sweeter than that of the nightingale which sings to the ears of the tired travelers in the Arabian desert.
