Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind

Blow, blow, thou winter wind,
Thou art not so unkind
As man’s ingratitude;
Thy tooth is not so keen,
Because thou art not seen,
Although thy breath be rude.
Heigh-ho! sing heigh-ho! unto the green holly;
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly;
Then heigh-ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.
Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky,
That dost not bite so nigh
As benefits forgot;
Though thou the waters warp,
Thy sting is not so sharp
As friend remembered not.
High-ho! sing heigh-ho! unto the green holly.
বয়ে যাও বয়ে যাও শীতের বাতাস,
নও তুমি অতটা নির্দয়
যতটা (নির্দয়) মানুষের অকৃতজ্ঞতা
তুমি অদৃশ্য বলেই
তোমার দাঁত অতটা ধারালো নয়,
যদিও দুর্বিনীত তোমার প্রশ্বাসটা
হেইয়োরে হইয়ো, হেইয়োরে
আমরা গেয়ে যাই সবুজ বনানী তলে;
বন্ধুত্ব ছলনা সিংহভাগ, প্রেম কেবল বোকামি;
তো! হেইয়োরে হেইয়ো লতা-গুল্ম তলে!
বড্ড মুখরিত জীবন এখানে।
জমে যাও, জমে যাও তুমি তিক্ত আকাশ
সেথা না আছে কোন কামড়ের ঘনঘটা
যেহেতু ভুলেছি সুখ-সুবিধার আশা
পাক খুলে ফেল, খুলে ফেল জল-বৃষ্টি
তীক্ষ্ণ নয় অতটা তোমার ধারা।
যতটা (তীক্ষ্ণ) বন্ধুর স্বরণ না করার যন্ত্রনা
হেইয়োরে হেইয়ো, হেইয়োরে হেইয়ো গেয়ে যাব মোরা বনানী তলে।
The Theme : The poem deals with the theme of ‘love and friendship’. The winter wind, though rough and foul, is not so harsh and cruel as the ingratitude of mankind. The winter wind is hardly seen and so its cruelty is imaginary. The sky is far above the earth and therefore its cruel behaviour is not felt keenly. Likewise, the forces of nature are much less cruel and harsh than the breach of trust and betrayal of friends and relatives.
(কবিতাটি ‘ভালোবাসা ও বন্ধুত্ব’ নিয়ে আলোকপাত করেছে। শীতের বাতাস রূক্ষ ও প্রতকূল হলেও মানুষের অকৃতজ্ঞতার মতো এত রূঢ় এবং নিষ্ঠুর নয়। শীতের বাতাস তেমন দেখা যায় না এবং তাই এর নিষ্ঠুরতাও কাল্পনিক। আকাশ পৃথিবী থেকে অনেক উপরে, অতএব এটির নিষ্ঠুর ব্যবহার তীব্রভাবে অনুভূত হয় না। তেমনিভাবে বন্ধুবান্ধব এবং আত্মীয়স্বজনদের বিশ্বাস ভঙ্গ এবং বিশ্বাসঘাতকতার চেয়ে প্রাকৃতিক শক্তিগুলো অনেকটাই কম নিষ্ঠুর এবং রূঢ়।)
