Once upon a time, there was a king who was very fond of knowing his future from astrologers. A good astrologer happened to stop at his capital on his way to Benaras. The king called on him to his palace. Then, he wanted to know his future and the astrologer said something unpleasant. At this the king got furious and condemned him to death saying, “Men like you should not live to spoil the peace of the world.” But another thought crossed his mind before the astrologer was removed for execution. “How long would you live?” asked the king. This astrologer mused for a while for some way of escape, as he was sure the king would prove him a liar putting him to death then and there, if he would live longer them that day. What ready wit he said, “The stars declare that I shall die only a week before your Majesty. So, goodbye. I shall wait to receive your Majesty where you have been sending me.” At this the king turned pale as dead and shouted. “Drive this wretch away, let him not come again.”

At this, the king turned pale. He realized that if the astrologer died, his own death would follow just a week later. Fear gripped the king's heart. "Drive this wretch away and let him not come again,” shouted the king. Thus, the astrologer saved his life using his presence of mind and intelligence.

অনুবাদ: একদা এক রাজা ছিলেন যিনি জ্যোতিষীদের কাছ থেকে তাঁর ভবিষ্যৎ জানতে খুব পছন্দ করতেন। একজন বিখ্যাত জ্যোতিষী বেনারস যাওয়ার পথে ঘটনাক্রমে তাঁর রাজধানীতে থামলেন। তার সম্পর্কে শুনে, রাজা প্রাসাদে তার সাথে দেখা করতে চাইলেন। জ্যোতিষী রাজাকে অত্যন্ত অসন্তোষজনক কিছু একটা বললেন। এতে রাজা অত্যন্ত ক্রোধান্বিত হলেন এবং তাকে মৃত্যুদণ্ড দিলেন। জ্যোতিষীকে মৃত্যুদণ্ড কার্যকর করার স্থানে নেওয়া হলো। সেখানে রাজা তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, "তুমি আর কতক্ষণ বেঁচে থাকবে?" জ্যোতিষী জানতেন যে রাজা তাকে মৃত্যুদণ্ড দিয়ে তাকে মিথ্যাবাদী সাব্যস্ত করবেন। তিনি তখন রক্ষা পাওয়ার জন্য কয়েক মুহূর্ত ভাবনা-চিন্তা করলেন। উপস্থিত বুদ্ধিতে তিনি বললেন, "তারারা ঘোষণা করে যে আমি আপনার মহোদয়ের ঠিক এক সপ্তাহ আগে মারা যাব! আপনি আমাকে যেখানে পাঠাচ্ছেন, আমি সেখানে আপনাকে গ্রহণ করার জন্য অপেক্ষা করব।" এতে রাজা ফ্যাকাশে হয়ে গেলেন। তিনি বুঝতে পারলেন জ্যোতিষী মারা গেলে তার মৃত্যুও আসন্ন। রাজা চিৎকার করে বললেন, "এই নরাধমটাকে তাড়িয়ে দাও এবং তাকে আর কখনো আসতে দিও না।" এভাবেই জ্যোতিষী তার উপস্থিত বুদ্ধি ব্যবহার করে প্রাণ রক্ষা করলেন।
