An English poet was staying in Italy for the benefit of his health. During his stay he received an unpaid letter from one of his friend in England. The poet had to pay double postage to take delivery of the letter. But it contained nothing but the sentence “I am well”. He became very annoyed. He wanted to teach his friend a good lesson. So he procured a heavy stone. He packed it up in a fine box. Then he sent it to his friend with the words on it “carriage to be paid on delivery.” His friend thought that the contents of the parcel were valuable. So he paid the heavy charge for carrying. With a great hope in mind he opened the box. To his utter surprise he found nothing but an ordinary stone. Thus the poet taught his friend a good lesson.

The king of Iran used to invite the great poet Sheikh Saadi very often to his court. Once, on his way to the king's court, the poet took shelter in a nobleman's house for a night. He was then wearing a very ordinary and cheap dress. The nobleman could not recognize him and did not behave well with him.

Next day, Sheikh Saadi left the place for the court of the king and was received with honour there. He stayed there for a few days and received rich gifts from the king. On his way back home, he again visited that nobleman's house wearing a costly and gorgeous dress. This time, the nobleman treated him with the best of the foods and comfort.

While eating, he was surprised to see the rich delicious food and understood the nobleman's attitude. Then, Sheikh Saadi, instead of eating the food, started putting them into the pockets of his rich dress. Being astonished, the nobleman asked him about his mysterious behaviour.

The poet answered that the given food was for his dress as he failed to receive same hospitality when he was in simple dress. The nobleman realized his earlier folly and became ashamed. He begged pardon to Saadi and also promised that he would never judge anyone by their dress. Being a kind-hearted man, Saadi forgave him.

অনুবাদ: পারস্যের রাজা মহাকবি শেখ সাদীকে প্রায়শ তার রাজ দরবারে আমন্ত্রণ জানাতেন। একদা রাজার দরবারে যাবার পথে এক রাতের জন্য কবি এক সম্ভ্রান্ত লোকের বাড়িতে আশ্রয় নিলেন। তিনি তখন অতীব সাধারণ ও কম দামি পোশাক পরিহিত ছিলেন। সম্ভ্রান্ত ব্যক্তিটি তাকে চিনতে না পেরে তার সাথে সদাচারণ করলেন প্রতান। পরের দিন, সাদী রাজার দরবারের উদ্দেশ্যে প্রস্থান করলেন এবং সম্মানের সাথে গৃহীত হলেন। তিনি কিছুদিন সেখানে অবস্থান করলেন এবং রাজার কাছ থেকে মূল্যবান উপহার সামগ্রী পেলেন। বাড়ি ফেরার পথে, তিনি দামি ও জাঁকজমকপূর্ণ পোশাক পরিধান করে সেই সম্ভ্রান্ত ব্যক্তির বাড়িতে পুনরায় গেলেন। এবার, সম্ভ্রান্ত ব্যক্তি তাকে সর্বোত্তম খাদ্যসামগ্রী ও স্বাচ্ছন্দ্য দিয়ে যত্ন করতে লাগলেন। আহার গ্রহণকালে তিনি দামি সুস্বাদু খাবার দেখে বিস্মিত হলেন এবং সম্ভ্রান্ত ব্যক্তির মনোভাব বুঝতে পারলেন। শেখ সাদী তখন খাবার না খেয়ে তার পোশাকের পকেটে খাবারগুলো রাখতে লাগলেন। অবাক হয়ে সম্ভ্রান্ত ব্যক্তি তার রহস্যময় আচরণ সম্পর্কে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন। কবি তখন উত্তর দিলেন প্রদত্ত খাবারটি তার পোশাকের প্রাপ্য কারণ, অতীব সাধারণ পোশাক পরিহিত থাকায় পূর্বে তিনি সমান আচরণ পাননি। সম্ভ্রান্ত ব্যক্তিটি তার পূর্বের বোকামি বুঝতে পারলেন এবং লজ্জিত হলেন। তিনি সাদীর কাছে ক্ষমা চাইলেন এবং প্রতিজ্ঞা করলেন যে তিনি কাউকে তাদের পোশাক দেখে বিবেচনা করবেন না। একজন দয়ালু ব্যক্তি হিসেবে সাদী তাকে ক্ষমা করলেন।

There lived in a forest a crane and a fox. They were good friends. They used to kill small creatures and shared the food together. One day, the crane invited the fox to his house for dinner. The fox hardly ate anything during the day, because he thought that his friend must have arranged for a good feast. But when the food was served by the crane, the fox found that it was inside a narrow-necked jar from which the fox could not lick to taste the food. He sat idly there while the crane sucked it by inserting his long neck and beak.

After the dinner, the crane asked the fox, "Friend, how did you enjoy the dinner?" The fox suppressed his great anger, and smilingly said, "Oh, it was really a fine dinner!"

Next day, the fox invited the crane to his house for dinner. The crane thought that he was not a fool like his friend. He would eat all the food given to him by the fox. He also did not take much food during the day to retain good appetite, and went early in the evening to the fox's house.

The fox received his friend cordially and offered him soup in a plate. The crane did not know how to eat the soup from a flat plate. The fox licked the soup from his own plate in a moment, while the crane sat idly to watch the fox eating the soup.

After the dinner, the fox asked the crane, "Friend, how did you enjoy the dinner?" The crane replied, "Oh, it was fine! I really enjoyed it." The crane cursed the sly fox from his heart, as he served him in the same way as he had himself served the fox. The hungry crane had to return home in an angry mood.

অনুবাদ: এক বনে একটি সারস এবং একটি শিয়াল বাস করত। তারা ভালো বন্ধু ছিল। তারা ছোট ছোট প্রাণীদের হত্যা করত এবং এক সাথে খাবার ভাগাভাগি করত। একদিন সারস পাখিটি শিয়ালকে তার বাড়িতে রাতের খাবারের জন্য আমন্ত্রণ জানাল। সেই দিন শিয়ালটি তেমন কিছুই খেল না। কারণ সে ভাবল নিশ্চয়ই তার বন্ধু ভোজের জন্য অনেক কিছু আয়োজন করেছে। যখন সারস খাবার পরিবেশন করল, এটি ছিল একটি সরু মুখওয়ালা পাত্রের ভেতর, যেখান থেকে শিয়াল তার খাবারের স্বাদ গ্রহণ করতে পারছিল না। সে সেখানে অলস হয়ে বসে রইল, যখন সারস তার লম্বা ঘাড় ও ঠোঁট পাত্রের ভেতর ঢুকিয়ে সব খাবার শুষে নিল। ভোজনের পর, সারস শিয়ালকে জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “বন্ধু, তুমি ভোজনটি কেমন উপভোগ করলে?” শিয়ালটি তার রাগ সংবরণ করল এবং হাসিমুখে বলল, “ওহ! এটি সত্যিই একটি চমৎকার ভোজন ছিল!” পরদিন, শিয়াল সারসকে তার বাড়িতে ভোজের আমন্ত্রণ জানাল। সারস ভাবল, সে তার বন্ধুর মতো এতটা বোকা নয়। শিয়াল তাকে যা খাবার দিবে, সে সব খেয়ে ফেলবে। ভালোভাবে ক্ষুধা লাগার জন্য সে সেদিন তেমন কিছুই খেলো না এবং সেদিন সন্ধ্যায় তাড়াতাড়িই শিয়ালের বাড়িতে চলে গেল। শিয়াল তার বন্ধুকে আন্তরিকভাবে স্বাগত জানাল এবং তার বন্ধুকে একটি থালায় স্যুপ খেতে দিল। সারসটি জানত না কীভাবে একটি সমতল থালা থেকে স্যুপ খেতে হয়। শিয়ালটি এক নিমেষেই তার থালা থেকে স্যুপ চেটে নিল, যখন সারসটি অলস হয়ে বসে শিয়ালের স্যুপ খাওয়া দেখছিল। রাতের খাবারের পর, শিয়াল সারসকে জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “বন্ধু, তুমি ভোজনটি কেমন উপভোগ করলে?” সারস উত্তর দিল, “ওহ! এটি দারুণ ছিল! আমি সত্যিই এটি উপভোগ করেছি।” সারসটি মনে মনে ধূর্ত শিয়ালকে অভিশাপ দিল, সে যেমনভাবে শিয়ালকে আপ্যায়ন করেছিল, শিয়ালও তেমনিভাবে তাকে আপ্যায়ন করল। ক্ষুধার্ত সারস রাগান্বিত মনে বাড়ি ফিরে গেল।
